Following on from our focus on the Play Everywhere Challenge, we’ve received really positive feedback from KaBOOM, the non-profit American company behind the challenge.
KaBOOM is exclusively focused on bringing play into the daily lives of all children in the US, and we believe that the same should happen in Britain.
We’ve scheduled a meeting with James Siegal – their CEO – for August, and can’t wait to discuss ways we at VoxUrban, and you our readers, can promote the concept of plaYce, and perhaps even bring the Play Everywhere Challenge to Britain.
PlaYcemakers at London Build
In the meantime, there are 4 significant plaYcemakers coming to the London Build Expo in October, and today we’re going to showcase them so that if you’re interested in combining active spaces in your built environment projects, you know where to look for support, equipment, ideas and even maintenance contracts.
What is PlaYce?
Before we get to the plaYcemakers, a quick recap on the concept of plaYce: –
PlaYce is the idea that through a child’s eyes and with adult support, any safe space can become a playable space.
The most innovative and future looking companies involved in the creation of playable spaces embrace this concept.
Whilst formal play equipment isn’t necessary for a space to become playable, of course parks and playgrounds have additional appeal to draw children and families. These appealing features include the fact that designated play spaces are free from cars, often aesthetically beautiful, and usually combine other elements such as benches, picnic areas, toilets and green space as well.
Those in the business of creating formal play space can encourage greater usage of the space by making the most imaginative area possible – and the best in the business look to the concept of plaYce to ensure everything they create inspires imaginative, creative and active play.
The PlaYcemakers at London Build Expo
London Build Expo is taking place at Olympia in London on the 26th and 27th of October 2016, and we’re already getting a bit over excited about it! So many innovative and exciting companies together under one roof…

The Children’s Playground Company Limited
The Children’s Playground Company Limited – CPCL for short – define their aspiration as: “to create distinctive, stimulating, imaginative and challenging playgrounds for children of all abilities.”
CPCL start from the perspective that playgrounds and play spaces should reflect the needs of their defined user groups. Therefore CPCL work closely with their clients, including councils, schools and community groups, to design, manufacture and install challenging play projects that are ideal for the target user group.
Based in Ireland and UK, CPCL uses Robinia wood for the creation of most of the equipment they develop and sell.
Writing about the wood on the website CPCL describe it thus: “Robinia is the only wood that is categorised in resistance class 1 (DIN EN 350-2) compared to oak 2 and pine 4. Hence Robinia can be used for outdoor structures without protective treatment, making it a great alternative to tropical woods. It is very heavy and considerably more solid than oak.”
CPCL create everything from traditional playground equipment to fitness stations, and from street furniture or meeting stations to multi games areas.
Find them at London Build on stand B74.
